I walked downtown around noon after an early thunderstorm saturated the area. The sweet gum trees litter our neighborhood with their hard, spiky fruit at this time of year. The rain, however, softened  the sweet gum balls until they were more like sponges.

morning thunderstorm—
sweet gum balls squish
under my footsteps
