Scrivener + iPhone = The Ultra-Portable Writer’s Kit

Want to ditch your notebook computer and try a super-lightweight, ultra-portable but still full-featured writing setup?

If you’re a Scrivener user, you’re in luck.

Literature and Latte recently released an iOS version of Scrivener, their highly-regarded writing app. Many writers swear by the desktop version; I wrote my first book with it and can’t imagine having used Word, Pages, or another word processor.

The new iOS version can sync your Scrivener projects with the desktop version via Dropbox. It’s fast and easy—I had it set up in minutes. Now I can work on writing projects on either my notebook or my iPhone and they stay in perfect sync. Grand.

But what about typing on your phone? Isn’t that kind of difficult?

Not if you have a Bluetooth keyboard.

I picked up an Anker Bluetooth keyboard and a Ugreen phone stand from Amazon: together they cost less than $25.

After a few days of use both at home, my studio, and the local coffee shop, I’m finding this to be a great way to write drafts, jot notes, and do freewriting. You won’t want to do much hard-core editing with this setup (save that for the notebook computer and desktop version of Scrivener) but it’s hard to beat this for a lightweight, distraction-free writing setup. Of course, the keyboard works with other apps as well so you can write email, add notes to Evernote, type texts—whatever.

At $19.99 the Scrivener app looks pricey to the uninitiated. But Scrivener veterans will see this as a bargain when they realize the value of what they’ll be able to do with a setup like this.

Birthday haiku for July 17, 2016

Yesterday I turned 47. Birthdays are a time for reflection; here are a few poems to mark the occasion.
