Want a job? Work hard.

25 February 2008

Today I met with the VP of human resources and the branch president of a local bank to discuss employment and internship possibilities for our students at LCC.  The meeting went very well–they’re eager to work with us and want to interview students immediately.  As we were wrapping up our conversation, I asked, "If you could give a word of advice to our students that would make them more employable, what would you say?"

With barely a moment’s hesitation, the VP of HR said, "Good work ethic and professionalism."  She then explained how the bank had hired a young man several months ago for a teller position, but with the understanding that he would have opportunities to advance within the organization over time.  After several weeks, however, he walked into the bank president’s office one day and said, "I don’t think I want to be a bank teller any more," and quit.  No two-weeks notice, no warning.  The VP of HR was amazed at the lack of concern shown by this young man for the people with whom he worked.  The branch president agreed.

So how do you find a job?  You work hard (now) and you show respect for your employers/teachers/co-workers/classmates (now).

Because, really, if you’re not working hard now and being professional now, when will you start?
