A professor I had in college used to tell me that if someone won’t listen to what you have to say because you’re not wearing a tie, then put on a tie, ’cause what you have to say is more important than not wearing a tie. He was right.
You might think this quote comes from some book on business etiquette; it doesn’t. It’s from photographer Joe McNally’s book The Moment it Clicks (an excellent book which my loving wife gave me for my birthday).
But the advice still holds whether you work as a photographer, a teacher, a business person, a _________.

Fortunately for me, I love wearing ties.
Good for you, David. And–as I’m sure you know–this isn’t really about wearing a tie, is it?
No, it isn’t about wearing ties. It’s about doing what you have to, within limits, to make yourself heard, when, as you say, what you have to say is more important than how you look. Nevertheless, I still love to wear ties.
